You may have heard that there is quite a bit of history regarding Hashing and the Hash House Harriers over the years.
Hashing as a”sport” has been around since before World War 2. You may have heard the Story of G in circle, but how much to you really know about how this all started.
Well the story goes that a group of British Colonial Officers and expatriates gathered at the Selangor Club in Kuala Lampur, which is now in what is called Malaysia. Among those present were Albert Stephen Ignatius “G” Gispert, Cecil Lee, Frederick “Horse” Thomson, Ronald “Torch” Bennett, Eric Galvin, H.M. Doig, and John Woodrow. It was “G” who suggested that the group be named the Hash House Harriers after the Selangor Club or “Hash House” where many of the original hashers ate and lived.
The following is from the charter of the 1938 charter of the Kuala Lumpur Hash House Harriers:
To promote physical fitness among our members
To get rid of weekend hangovers
To acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer
To persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel
